About Us

  • Akiva Marcus, MD is the newest addition to the Digestive Disease Center of the Palm Beaches. Dr. Marcus graduated Summa cum Laude from Yeshiva University with a Bachelor of Arts in biology. He then attended Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he participated in a prestigious MD/PhD program. During his PhD years, he performed cutting-edge adult stem cell research leading to numerous scientific publications, awards and patents. He completed his PhD in 2007 and graduated from medical school in 2009. He subsequently completed his internal medicine training at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, where he earned the Dr. Ira B. Cohen Award for Most Outstanding House Officer. Dr. Marcus then went across the East river and attended Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine for his fellowship in Gastroenterology. As a fellow, he received extensive training in all aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology, including inflammatory bowel disease, chronic hepatitis, motility disorders and the newest field of fecal microbial transplant. Over the years, he has presented at numerous scientific meetings and recently published a chapter in the prestigious textbook Sleisenger and Fordtran's Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease and completed revising the section on Chronic Gastritis for the well-known website, MedScape.com. A prime reason for moving to Florida was the warm weather and the opportunity to participate in a practice which focuses on all aspects of gastrointestinal disease - both in and out of the hospital setting. His practice is based at West Palm Hospital. Professional interests include diagnostic, therapeutic and video capsule endoscopy, in addition to motility disorders, colorectal cancer screening, chronic liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease. He has expertise in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy, video capsule endoscopy, manometry, pH studies and luminal dilation. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, American Association of the Study of Liver Diseases and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has earned numerous awards throughout the years, including Meritorious and Distinguished Community Services awards. Outside of work, Dr. Marcus spends most of his time with his wife and five beautiful children. His hobbies include fishing, hiking and camping.
