About Us

  • Interwoven into the fabric of the Studio's teaching philosophy is the all-important legacy of the inspirational master-teacher of movement and theatre, Jacques Lecoq. Lecoq's principle that "tout bouge", everything moves, incorporates the imaginative growth and personal responsibility of the performing artist. Mr. Murphy brings into play the Lecoqian position that teaching principles change with time and events. The Studio is committed to offering many perspectives, all of which involve comprehensive preparation designed to train the serious student of the stage and screen. It requires full student participation of body, mind, voice, imagination and the art of collaboration while encouraging participants to question and shape what they have learned as they engage themselves in the realm of the performing arts.

The studio works with your artistic goals and level of experience to improve your abilities, strengthen your confidence, and in some cases, open the door to the marketplace. Rooted in the studio’s methodology is an appreciation for the legacies of Jacques Lecoq, Michael Chekhov, Sanford, Meisner, Uta Hagen, Viola Spolin, Moshe Feldenkrais, and others. The studio also acknowledges the latest insights into the cybernetic approaches to actor training and theatre production (represented in the work of Peter Brook and Arianne Mnouchkine among others). A pool of accomplished teachers will join the studio from time to time. They offer complimentary areas of expertise. When conditions allow, these individuals will give special workshops and seminars. Their names and bios can be found on the Guest Artist page. We look forward to meeting you and assisting you to achieve your artistic and personal life goals.
