Kief's has been in the business of home audio and music longer than many current audio brands have been available in the United States. Begun in 1959, Kief's has weathered hundreds of changes in the audio and retail industries, outlasted dozens of competing businesses, overcome recessions, changes in consumer interest; through it all it has come out a strong and well-managed business focused on customer service and straight talk. John Kiefer personally comes into the store six days a week to discuss audio with customers and spread his message of laying out the important facts for customers and helping them make educated decisions in their audio choices.

Kief's Audio Video was originally established as Kief's Records on November 19, 1959 by John J. Kiefer at the Malls Shopping Center, 711 West 23rd St. The business moved close to the entrance of the University of Kansas in the Holiday Plaza Shopping Center, 2100A West 25th St. in the spring of 1977, and to its present location at 2429 Iowa St. in August of 1988. In August of 1994, Robert D. Kiefer joined his father as a shareholder and the business name changed to Kief's Audio Video, Inc.
