  We are extremely proud of our rich heritage. Knife River was founded in 1917 primarily as a lignite coal mining company near an Indian village in North Dakota. We have since then expanded our services beyond just coal mining and have become one of the nation's largest aggregate producers, and we have also rapidly spread across the entire United States.
