  • WHAT IS CAPOEIRA?
Capoeira is Brazil's fast and graceful Afro-Brazilian art form, which blends dance, martial arts, and acrobatics into one beautiful art like no other. The martial art was created by Africans brought to Brazil from many parts of Africa as a means of self-protection and as a way to fight for their own freedom. During its early years, Capoeira was disguised as a dance in order to be practiced openly.

Capoeira is thought to have originated in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian plantations practiced self-defense disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments. The result was a "game" of fluid ground movements, spinning kicks, and daring acrobatics set to the energetic clapping and singing of spectators.

Kekee was first introduced to Capoeira in 2005 at a talent show presented at the University of Florida. She was captivated with Capoeira and immediately started training along side her husband Nico. They both trained with Professor Borracha at the Brazilian cultural art exchange intensely for 6 months before moving to NYC. While in NYC Kekee continued her training at The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater with Professor Tiba.
