About Us

  • I graduated from UW-Madison in 1990 with a B.A., majoring in Psychology. I took advanced classes in Psychochemistry, Advanced Physiological Psychology, and the Sociology of Mental Health & Mental Disorders. I graduated "With Distinction (Top 10%)". I graduated from UW-Madison in 1994 with a M.S. in Counseling. I wrote my Master's Thesis on Assessing Abuse in an Intimate Relationship. Around 2003, I created a domestic violence education program called Stay Focused on Healthy Relationships (which has been incorporated into SFC). For this program, I designed a tool to assist one in controlling their behavior called The Model of Self-Control. I plan to apply for membership with the Wisconsin Batterers Treatment Provider Association so I can provide certified abuser treatment. On 7-19-13, I obtained my Professional Counselor Training License (LPC-IT 1829-226) which is valid until 7-19-21. I need to accumulate 3000 clinical hours approved by the Department of Safety and Professional Services and take the National Counseling Examination in order to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). In 2015, I completed an externship (300 hours) at Family Service in the Alternatives to Aggression program as a facilitator in a certified abuser treatment program. Dr. Gerald Thomas is my DSPS-approved clinical supervivisor. On 2-28-18, I obtained my Substance Abuse Counselor Training License (SAC-IT 18473-130) which is valid until 2-28-19. James Crawford is my DSPS-approved clinical supervisor. I am a Comprehensive Community Services (CCS) Network Provider at Dane County Human Services and currently provide a variety of services to that population. I worked as a Probation / Parole Agent with the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections from 4-15-96 to 11-24-17. A disproportionate number of cases on my caseload over the years were comprised of probationers and parolees with significant mental health issues. I have worked collaboratively with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and therapists, and other mental health professionals to supervise, guide, advise, and hold individuals accountable for their behavior. I plan to partner with D.O.C. since retiring from the Department to provide counseling services to probationers and parolees. At D.O.C., I was a Motivational Interviewing Ambassador. Agents are continually being trained on Evidenced-Based Practices and learning new and innovative ways to work with this population to address community safety. I am familiar with the use of Carey Guides and BITS (Brief Intervention ToolS) developed by the Carey Group. I am striving to be accepted in MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers). In addition to working as a P&P Agent over the past 20 years, I have worked as a Human Services Specialist for 4 years providing crisis stabilization at the Dane County Care Center with Tellurian, 11 months at a Community-Based Residential Facility for a population of older adult males with persistent and chronic mental illness, and as a Youth Support Specialist from 11-8-13 to 3-18-18 at Catholic Charities in the Youth Living Alternatives program providing community support for youth with severe behavioral challenges on the autism spectrum. In the Spring of 2017, I did an internship at the Dane County Jail with CorrectCare Solutions providing therapy to inmates at the jail. I am also seeking to become certified in teaching WRAP (Wellness Action Recovery Program) and a T4C (Thinking 4 Change) facilitator. Stay Focused Counseling, LLC will continue to grow and expand as I gain more experience as a treatment provider. I have a special interest in helping those with crippling anxiety and debilitating depression which interfere with your ability to experience peace, joy, and happiness. I want to help people who struggle with mental illness and substance abuse issues. I want to help people stay out of jail or prison and change their lives with better relationships and and more satisfying jobs. I want to assist you on the road to success! As SFC operates into the future, I will be bringing new staff aboard to help with various aspects of Stay Focused and guide SFC clients on their Pathway to Success. Feel free to contact me at any time to discuss a role you can play and join my team!
