Pack heavy items in small boxes for easy lifting. Call your auto or home insurance co. to obtain renters insurance on stored items. Label all boxes! Store boxes with labels showing for easy access. Put items you anticipate needing the most into storage last so that they are in front. Use fabric covers to cover furniture and other items (plastic can cause moisture to condense under it). Use zip lock bags to store screws & bolts and tape them to the items that they belong to. Do not store items that may break if frozen. Do not store food items since rodents could get into them. Put a few drops of oil on items that might rust. Avoid putting oiled items in contact with other items. Do not store combustibles, perishables, flammables, explosives or elicit materials. Put boxes & furniture on pallets to allow for better ventilation. Pack books flat to avoid damaging spines. Drain gasoline from small engines including lawn mowers and snow blowers. Remove table legs to conserve storage space. Do not store irreplaceable photos. Store heavy items on bottom and lighter items on top. Buy a good lock and securely latch your door when you leave.
