About Us

  • Dr. James Slauterbeck is head team orthopedic surgeon for the University of Vermont Catamount Athletic Teams and professor with tenure at the Larner College of Medicine. He treats patients with conditions such as ACL tears, knee ligament injury, knee meniscus injury, knee cartilage loss and injury, shoulder dislocation, and shoulder rotator cuff repair. Dr. Slauterbeck specializes in ACL reconstruction, cartilage restoration, meniscus transplant, and multi ligament knee reconstruction. He also specializes in shoulder instability reconstruction and rotator cuff repair. His research interests include ACL injuries in female athletes, ACL injury risk factors, lower extremity injury prevention, epidemiology of sports injury in middle and high school athletes, and epidemiology of concussions in athletes. He has over 90 publications in peer reviewed orthopedic journals and has received funding from the NIH and other foundations for his research.  Dr. Slauterbeck finds the most rewarding part of his job is seeing a smile on an athletes face when they return to the court or field after surgical repair of an injury. He is most proud of watching athletes recover after devastating career altering injuries, and return to their sport and life style with zeal. His philosophy is to provide excellent care with empathy, respect, and integrity for all his patients. His hope is that every athlete young and old have the opportunity to return to the sport or active lifestyle they envision. Learn more about orthopedic care at the UVM Medical Center.
